Anyone making any? These are mine:

Get out more
Do a few 4,000ers
Do the full Cuillin traverse
Tick off more classic routes from my book "The Long Routes"
Spend less on gear
Get out moreI probably won't manage all of them!

I'll sign up to 1, and possibly 6 as well. Not much danger of me spending too much on gear though :(

In that case you should easily be able to do 5! Have you got any other plans for the year? Maybe another challenge like the 3 peaks?

Get out more is the main one cant think of any others

David

I doubt I could spend any less on gear! I plan to do the 5 peaks this time actually - I was thinking of doing Everest base camp, but I don't think I've the time to make the money to do it. Maybe next year if I can raise the money over summer. Hopefully also doing some wild camping over the holiday with some friends (don't know if they're masochistic enough to want to bivouac in winter yet!)
Do you have any particular events in mind yet?

i wouldnt fly all the way out to nepal just to do everest base camp, think your money could be spent much more wisely

Everest base camp is one of the charity events my uni does, so I wouldn't be doing it just to do it. It's the 'step above' the 3/5 peak challenges. Not sure if I'm brave enough to do Kilimanjaro, or something on my own

I agree with Marmot - from what I've heard EBC isn't that exciting & there are no views of Everest when you get there.

If you want to do something for charity, why not choose a cheaper activity that you'd really like to do and get sponsored? There are loads of cheaper trekking destinations in Europe - the Pyrenees, the Dolomites etc. You don't have to take part in an officially organised event to raise money & you'd be able to afford it without living on dry pasta for the rest of the year!

Was it me you were asking if I had any events in mind? I haven't really planned events as such, but the vague plan is to have 2 weeks in the Alps in July & a week on Skye in September.

I got this guidebook (http://www.amazon.co.uk/4000m-Peaks-Alps-Selected-Climbs/dp/0900523662/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198829459&sr=8-1) for Christmas & I'm feeling inspired.

Try to get out on camping for a night at least one weekend a month, combine with a 2 day hike from a start/finish point at times.
Do some night time walks (in areas covered during the day)
Get fit
Get a border collie... well it will help with 1 and 5, and provide company on 3 and 4:p

I'm just a bit worried about travelling abroad and climbing on my own (and before you say, it's never a great idea to climb alone if you can help it!), but I don't know who I could go with, other than in one of the university things. None of my friends at uni are really into the outdoors. Are there any organisations that do this sort of thing that you'd recommend? I know I could find it out for myself, I'm just wondering if anyone has done something like that before.

Yes, but I have to wonder if it is compulsory to look like a muppet whilst doing so? I appreciate your answer might be 'You always look like a muppet Ollie' which would have some comedic value but not really answer the question at hand...

Marmot
6th January 2008, 01:13 AM
how can u loook like a muppet whilst out on a run - more then usual obviously

MariaD
6th January 2008, 01:51 PM
I always look like a muppet when I run - the dodgy lycra, red face, sweat & mud is not a good look! There's no point worrying about it though.

MariaD
8th January 2008, 10:11 AM
So have you been for a run yet? If not, go and do it!

Just allocate half an hour each week when you are usually free and make that your running time. The best time to choose is one when you've just finished doing something else (e.g. a regular seminar) & haven't settled on the sofa yet, as it's far easier to put your trainers on and head out the door immediately after you get home than it is when you've been chilling out for the past few hours.
