I was just wondering, what's the 'best' or most unusual meal you've had on camp ever? :p

Stir fried worms. But I passed on them and went straight on to the main course.

While in South Africa in my younger days we tried elephant and snake. found both enjoyable. but in this counrty while out hiking I like to take jerky with me I find it a great nibbler to chew while you are actually hiking

I know quite a few 'jerky' fans - never really seen the appeal to be honest! Perhaps I should try it again some time!!

I like the traditional jerky, that is properly smoked instead of being salted like it is wherever I see it in the UK.
My favourite food for after and during hikes at the moment is samosas', bhajis' and other such delights. I buy them from the Spar convenience store just down the road, ready to eat hot or cold :)

Can I ask where you get squeezy cheese from? I seem to remember using Primula cheese in a tube about twenty years ago. However  I saw some yesterday in Sainsburys and this product now appears to require refridgeration.

Refridgeration? Don't bother - stick it in your rucksack & it'll be fine...
(That's what I do, anyway).

Surely somebody would've passed a law about squeezy cheese.. it's a crime to cheeses!
We baked a few naan breads on my DofE! That was pretty cool.

I made an excellent piece of slow roasted lamb flank last time I was out, had it with couscous, excellent. Just put pieces of garlic in the flank, position it on the spit and cook slowly beside the fire until it's ready, it's quite thin so 2 hours would be the most you'd need. Get it cooking before you setup sleeping equip, then do that, have a nap or whatever then it is ready. Tender, and extremely flavourful, as well as being extremely cheap. Couscous was made up with water and a little olive oil, and had raisins and peppers stirred in. Great.

Most unusual - and not one I would recommend! There is a story here - involves bad weather - communication breakdown - an epic - and a SAR helicopter!
Short version! Were sailing our kayak with a friend in Sound of Harris. We lost him - radios didn't work - called coastguard and asked them to keep a lookout for him. They launched a search - he was OK - had headed back to base. We were stuck on an island. Dave had bought the survival rations from boat instead of the supa dupa exped food bag! It was pouring with rain and blowing a gale and he refused to go back to boat for other bag. We had rice, a tin of tuna and some lemon sauce amongst other things - so decided to go for it! Ummmm Dave tipped out our flask so we could have some water for the rice - unfortunately it contained black tea. So - we dined on tea flavoured rice with tuna and lemon sauce! Not to be recommended! lol
Anyway - in the meantime the SAR heli had located our friend and came back to find us - winched a guy down to let us know he was OK - checked out our kit - was very happy with it and flew away! I think we made the Stornoway Times - 2 lines apparently!

Best food was when we were paddling and met up with a family of divers who gave us some scallops. They were huge - and to die for.
Scallops wrapped in bacon and lightly fried, washed down with wine! Awesome.

A most enjoyable meal was one time guiding on the Buffalo River. The scout troop found crayfish like crazy and caught them. They caught them for fun not knowing the food value. I started up a pot with a bag of crab boil and proceeded to enjoy, finally a lad decided to try one of the "mud bugs" and the frenzy was on. Think of them as little lobsters.

Clunk, what is the British crayfish like? At one time our catfish farms feed crayfish and if they got too big, well we got to eat them. Times have changed and now the crayfish bring more than the catfish. What is the fishing like over ther? Flyfish or spincast?
