In my opinion there has not been a single tent peg design that doesnt bend. But which is the one most prefered. What materials are good? and are plastic pegs out dated?

For general base camping; I would say the metal pegs that are V shaped. omething similar to this, http://www.opentip.com/images/imagecache/EQU-VAR170_100_74.jpg
For lightweight use; I would certainly say light weight aluminium typical tent pegs. These are lightweight and don't bend really really easily, just be careful how you put them into the ground.
In response to your second question; I certainly don't think that plastic pegs are outdated, the only thing that metal pgs have over them are that they don't snap. Plastic pegs are lightweight, cheap and havea long life span. I still have some from the tent my parents bought when they first started camping about 15-20 years ago. I use these as backup, I carry them whenever I'm walking as they can be used to improvise shelters with survival bags etc.

Hmmm, I've fallen out with those metal V-shaped pegs. They're horrible! I had one snap on me, though that was probably a defect, and they don't seem to be holding the tent down too well! They also seem to collect so much mud it's ridiculous!
Definately lightweight aluminium for me. If you look after them and put them in properly they don't bend, it's only when you get people stamping them in that they start to mess up!

I've got ones that came with my MSR tent. They are square (bout 4mm), weigh nothing and go through anything. Also as they are square its well easy to scrape them clean.

Surely just a cylindrical shaft is even easier to clean?
