only ever been to the lakes by car (passenger) and was drunk the whole time and don't remember where!!
got a week off next week and wanna go camp out for 3 nights (midweek and sober), have to use public transport and the legs I have.
any ideas where I should head to? going solo and would be happy enough in a campsite or to go wild..........

There is a National Trust campsite near Ambleside which is a good base to hike from.
http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-holidays/w-camp/w-northwest-lakedistrict_camping.htm
Plenty of interesting fells around there.
But to be honest pretty much anywhere you go in the Lake District is good.
Wild camping or official campsite based it doesn't really matter too much.
I don't drive and either have to cycle or use Shank's Pony to get anywhere and know that Ambleside, Windermere, Keswick, Kendal and Penrith all have good public transport links.

My suggestion would be Patterdale. It's quieter than somewhere like Ambleside, accessible by bus from Penrith, it's got a lovely campsite with gorgeous views across Ullswater (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=339675&y=516825&z=3&sv=339675,516825&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf), and it's a fantastic starting place for walks (Helvellyn, Fairfield, St Sunday Crag, Hart Crag, High Raise, High Street).
Oh, and I know you said "sober", but the campsite is also walking distance from the pub in Glenridding! I watched England get knocked out of the 2002 World Cup there at an ungodly time of the morning.

Just stayed there is bank holiday weekend. Its a great site, clean, quiet, a few good pubs (to eat at that is, if your staying sobber ;) );). Plenty of good walks start from the campsite or near as dam it. Would highly recommend it.

Pooley bridge/ glenridding type area is really nice, pretty much anywhere near ullswater/north lakes is great in my opinion (south lakes too busy!)
I'll have a think!

South Lakes isn't too busy if you know where to go - stay away from Windermere/Ambleside and visit places to the west like Kentmere/Longsleddle Valley - sometimes you can walk for hours without seeing anyone

This was a while ago, I ended up gettin the train to Penrith walkin down to Pooley Bridge camping there (and had a really good breakfast in the little place by the bridge) and hen walking down Ullswater to Patterdale, camping there, got a bus back to penrith and a train home. Was really good fun and nice to get inside myself for a couple days without having to speak to anyone
