I had an appointment with the doctor the other day about some tendonitis ive recently aquired in my foot due to excesssive climbing (the pain is tot he extent that ive got to rest up for several months, i.e. no climbing!
but despite him being45 minutes late we got onto talking about climbing and walking and he told me about some of his uni trips and how ridiculous it was to drink the night before a big walk or climb.
So here we are, the reason for this thread, you shouldn't drink before a big day due to the next day the alcohol content in your bloood is still high, meaning your oxygen circulation is poor. You'll get very thirsty, and your glucagon stores will be used to break down the alcohol so you will get tired very quickly.
Just a bit of medical trivia i thought might be interesting

i disagree with that completely. Ive gone out on so many walks and climbs after a night out and hav hardly ever felt the worse for wear because of it

I'm not dis-agreeing with the medical man but a mate of mine who recently summited on Everest said that Russel Bryce, the expedition leader takes nothing with him but lager for the summit push, no food or nothing - guess the larger combats the thirst!

What he commented on was not drinking BEFORE a day out on the hills, he didnt say anything about drinking whilst out on the hills.
All that wheat and cops must be good for you!
From what i gather it doesnt really matter if u dont eat anyhting, your stomach wont digest it anyway cause all the bloood would have been diverted to your muscles, and once you hit the "death zone" your body starts digesting itself anyway.
Ive been told you lose more weight just walking to, and staying at, the base camp of everest then going on any weight loss program, your metabolism is just so much faster the pounds just get eaten away

That seems to go against everything I have ever read or been told about the consumption of alcohol during strenuous outdoor activity in the cold. I always save my lager for the pub afterwards.

It seems most people here are in agreement that drinking booze on outdoor activities is OK. Shouldn't we be a little more objective and informed?

All that wheat and cops must be good for you! if you're refering to marmot's post i think he was joking.
I have a nasty experience (resulting in me washing sick from my hair) after walking with a guy who just ate jafffa cakes and shandy on a walk

You can tell. If the vomit has little orange bits in it and the person has not eaten diced carrot for over three weeks, then it must have been Jaffa Cakes. :)

Actually thats a misconception, the orange bits in sick are parts of your stomach lining, not carrots

Drinking while participating in strenuous outddor activity may be unwise, but having a few pints in the pub afterwards is an important part of the whole thing for me.

Quite a few pubs would blatantly go out of business without the usual crowd of walkers and hikers
