suggest and discuss possible routes here, remember nothing difficult, more of a gentle stroll. Suggest possible dates here too.

I haven't got any experience of walking in the peaks. So I am unable to make any surgestions.

I haven't walked in the peak since I were a nipper, but I do know that there are nice walks around Edale.

8th April 2008, 07:59 PM
will it be worth bringing rockshoes for a spot of bouldering?
Ant
8th April 2008, 08:00 PM
This is basically just a gentle stroll in the hills. but If you'd like to do some boudering along the way, your welcome to, depending on the availibility of boulders on the route.

Few nice places to walk in the Peak.
You've got Mam Tor, paved now so nice and easy, very busy now though due to the easy access. Hollins Cross, Winnat's Pass, Kinder, are a few other options too.
I'll have a look on Memory Map tonight at some of my routes to see if there's anything suitable (with a pub at the end) :D
Ollie

I'll try my absolute hardest to be there! :)

Lol I guess that was thrown in my direction.
Not had chance to look yet but have a fairly easy route in my head. Will work out the distance tonight to see what it come out like
MariaD
10th April 2008, 07:09 PM
It doesn't have to be that easy, does it?
Ant
10th April 2008, 07:54 PM
It doesn't have to be that easy, does it?
no not really.. Just no steep hills or scrambles.
MariaD
10th April 2008, 07:58 PM
What about routes with optional scrambles that can be bypassed by walking? And what counts as steep?
MariaD
10th April 2008, 07:58 PM
Or we could run?
Ant
10th April 2008, 08:10 PM
Yeah, optional scrambles will be fine. Steepness... umm... well.. Really that dosn't matter overall. It's easier to narrow things down with ideas for a route. Not having maps of the area, I'm unable to come up with any routes myself.
Special_K
10th April 2008, 08:39 PM
Lol you're crazy Maria
Here are what I have looked at:
Option 1:
Park at Speedwell Cavern (SK140828) near Castleton, Walk back into Catleton and up Cave Dale(SK150827) and follow the Limestone Way to (SK135813) walt towards Slitherstone Mines (SK125814), then North towards Oxlow House (SK126826), North past Windy Knoll up towards Mam Tor and to the trig point on top (SK127835). Then along to Hollins Cross (SK136845), then down towards Woodseats (SK137842), then follow the path back to Speedwell (SK140828).
Total distance: 10.9km
I'll post option 2 in a sec,
Maps - Landranger 110, Explorer OL1
Special_K
10th April 2008, 08:51 PM
Option 2
Meet at Edale Train Station (or the local Campsite) (SK123 853), walk up to Grindsbrook Booth (and past the Old Nags Head) towards Grinds Brook. Walk up Grindsbrook Clough (SK105872). Stick to the path (a nav challenge in poor weather) and head for Kinder Downfall (maybe a good lunch spot)(SK082889). Then follow the Pennine Way towards Kinder Low (SK078870). Head towards Jacob's Ladder (SK088861).Then follow the Pennine Way through Upper Booth (SK102853) towards Edale (Sk122859) and the Old Nags Head.
Distance 15.4Km if starting and finishing at the train station.
Maps OL1 and Landranger 110
Options of campsite close by plus train link if people don't wish to drive
Let me know what you think, just 2 suggestions but welcome to feedback and hopefully the routes inclue the option to scramble, nav or just provide a distance to walk

I never thought of using Google Earth. Memory Map files are too large being raster files (plus being copyrighted by OS)

Both look okay. Think i'll go along with option 2, simply as its accessible by train.

12th April 2008, 06:44 AM
I can't drive so option 2 would be best for me.
The Old Nags Head sounds great. Do we have to pass it the first time tho?

surely we should just name a campsite to meet up at, and then depending who turns up they can do there own thing, numbers and groups dependant?
- has a date been set? am a week behind on posts
Ant
12th April 2008, 12:44 PM
No date set yet Marmot.
David posted about a members camp, with a bushcraft theme. I suppose those members who are not into bushcraft could still come along but do their own thing. The walk is more of a day out. But of course, if anyone wants to camp, their welcome too.
MariaD
12th April 2008, 02:44 PM
I'd treat the peaks as a day out & not bother to camp, but it would be easy enough to meet people at a campsite.

I wish i could come but since i'm 500km away.... its a bit far.
MariaD
17th April 2008, 07:20 PM
I returned a lost dog (of the 'rat on string' type) to its owner on Tuesday night - and had to spend a fair amount of time wandering around the woods in the dark, hail & rain to do it (in just my thin running gear as well). I felt like a proper good samaritan!
Ant
17th April 2008, 07:25 PM
Maria, If it was a border collie you would have found it hard to do so.
MariaD
17th April 2008, 08:08 PM
I wasn't wandering around looking for the dog - I was looking for the owner!
I was just unlocking my bike after an intervals session (running) & I saw a man run into the woods shouting oddly. I thought it was a bit tyres, and got on my bike & cycled off. I went all the way up the hill & onto the street & then I saw the dog, cowering under a bush (the weather was appalling) & I twigged that the man was probably shouting for his dog, so I got the dog to follow my bike back towards the woods. The guy had already gone a fair way by then & was out of earshot, which was why it took so long. He was very chuffed when reunited with his dog though.

18th April 2008, 05:19 PM
Edale route is a good one and as someone else pointed out can be mightily bogy in the middle if its been wet. The first time I did it was on a touring bike. Some twit in Caslteton YHA told me it was entirely dooable. I ended up carying the bike up Grindsbrook, through the bogs to Kinder Downfall (in thick fog) and then down to Kinder Resevoir. I couldn't ride the damn thing until I got back on the road. I even had panniers with wellies in them. I then cycled back to Castleton and arived back absolutely knackered with bruises all over my shoulder from carrying the bike. I can't believe I did that.
A friend of mines daughter is doing Iron Man comps around the workd at the mo. She did the same walk having cycled up from Nottingham in the morning and then back in the evening. My eyes water at the thought!
Theres a few starred rock routes at Kinder Downfall too.
Gosh, I've been off this sight for a little while and I come back to 280 posts about brown willie's and mamores, and discover Maria is a drunk! WHat's beein going on????
Oh and after my night in a snowhole, the first thing the local constable did was give me a shot of whisky. He obviously hadn't done the hypothermia course. Nice whisky though.
Sounds like your back into training Maria. Is anyone signed up for the Open 5 in May in the Lakes?
And do we have a date for this walk?
MariaD
18th April 2008, 05:25 PM
Not yet, but I should be - I'll do it now.
MariaD
18th April 2008, 05:32 PM
I've entered now in the Female Solo category. I'm not expecting to break any records (my physio has made it pretty clear that I should still consider myself to be recuperating!), but I reckon my hip will hold out to let me grab a few checkpoints. Should be a good laugh & good training for the Alps, regardless. I'm marshalling at the Meanwood Valley Trail race the day before, so that entire weekend is filled up now!
I'm not a drunk, by the way! I hardly ever have more than 2 beers in a row...
Malcolm L
18th April 2008, 09:01 PM
I was kidding. Mmm. I just had a very nice limoncello liquore at an Italian restaurant.
I also just signed up for the Open 5. I will need to start running again! I've been doing circuit training at the local leisure centre, which has been good, and cycling about 16 miles a day to work when I'm based in Leeds. The running has been on the back burner though. There's only so much time in a day! Hardly getting to the climbing wall either, which is desperate, and still not touched rock this year thanks to the weather. Looks like you've been doing some great Scottish stuff.
I agree that the Open 5 is good interim goal for the Alps. I'm just trying to build up fitness for August and the event is a great fun way to do it. The circuit training is a good way of meeting the locals around Garforth as well.
Do you have to be really fit, fast and hard to join a running club? I quite fancy it, but I'm thinking everyone must be super fit. Sorry to hear you're still having problems.
Is anyone else signed up yet for Open 5? A few people were muttering about it a few weeks ago.
MariaD
18th April 2008, 09:25 PM
Which Italian? (Btw: if you want a recommendation for excellent restaurants in Leeds - try The Millrace (http://www.themillrace-organic.com/splash.html) in Kirkstall. It's a bit pricy, but worth every penny!)
So you're living in Garforth? It's nice area. You don't have to be fast to join a running club. Despite being VERY slow (mainly due to the gammy hip*, but also because I'm just a plodder!), I'm a member of the Valley Striders (http://www.valleystriders.org.uk/striders.htm) (and I'm not even the slowest!). That's miles away from you though - you want somewhere you can get to easily of an evening. Don't know what your local running club would be, to be honest, but you could check out the Athletics UK page.
If you're cycling 16 miles a day, I reckon you'll be more than fit enough though. I really miss being able to cycle to work - fitting exercise in with a 2-3hr daily commute is a struggle.
* I'm not so much 'having problems' as just aware that I need to take it slowly. My NHS physio has cleared me to run regularly, and even do speed sessions, but I'm definitely still in rehab and when I slightly overdo it my hip really hurts.

Not a good weekend for me. I'm running a Duke of Edinburgh and National Navigation Award Camp that weekend.
I'll be in that neighbourhood on Sunday. Doing some navigation practicals just below Stanage.
If you do go for that weekend hope you have fun and look forward to the piccies.

I just realised I didn't read the whole of your post. Sorry!
I do understand the problem with fitness and commuting. I've done absolutely zilch running to prepare for the Open 5, so I'm going to have to get out over the weekend. I've only just managed to get back to the climbing wall after a break of six weeks and my strength had really dropped. V depressing but it's starting to come back.
How is your training going?

Ant - 24-26th isn't any good for me, I'm working the 31st and I'm not sure about June at the moment. First 3 weekends in July I'm the Alps, but I could almost definitely do 26/27th July though!
Malcolm - Training's going pretty good, actually. I accidentally competed in a club handicap on Tuesday and beat my pre-injury time, which was good. Still taking it steady & trying not to overdo things, but I'm managing to get out running reasonably often. I'm not going to set the world alight at the Open5 though!
(Ant - Is it okay if my post is partly about the walk?)

As long as your a goxplore member you can come along. Members are welcome to invite freinds and family along if they wish.

For those interested in a route might I suggest starting from the Robin Hood pub and taking a circular route via Baslow, up to the Wellington Monument, along Baslow, Curbar and Froggatt edges, coming back around Big Moor, finally picking up Birchen's Edge on the way back to the pub;-) There's a campsite nearby for those who want to sleep it off before going home.
For bouldering / climbing Birchen's Edge has plenty of variety from easy to downright difficult.
And Maria, with my knees you can forget about running!!

For the record, I am currently free:
30-31 Aug (but that's not really any good, as I start new job on 1st Sep)
6-7 Sep
4-5, 11-12, 18-19 & 25-26 Oct
And this weekend as well, but that would be a bit last minute!

I'm working till 6th September now and free after that till 5th October. Do you need a load of people to make it worthwhile? I would still enjoy it with only 5 people (though I'd be worried my incredible unfitness would be more apparent in such a small group!)

I prefer walking in small groups as well.

I've got lots of college work to do so can't make this date. As there's been no intrest I think we're best calling it off for now.
If anyone would like to arrange a walk themselves, please feel free to start a thread with details of where, how long, the type of walk. eg, roadside, hill, mountain, moorland etc, and a few possible dates. :)

Ok no worries,
Looks like I'm going to be spending most of the weekend how to fund a 2-week Camel Trek in Rajasthan next year :D

I'm taking my car to the garage tomorrow :-(
Will we ever get this sorted out?

Who knows?
Prehaps a better idea will be for people to arrange walks in their area. With different dates. For example, each weekend in November or however the walk organiser sees fit, then if anyone wishes to turn up they can on any of those dates.
Of course, walks like this one can be arranged still, but it does mean that a lot more planning is required as we have discovered.

It's because we're all over the country. I can nip for a local walk & do other stuff on the same day, but I can't drive to the Peak District & still have time to get other necessary stuff done.
