How do you know if you've broken your foot?

I did a rather daring (if I say so myself) and extravagant leap off a boulder at Alsmcliff on Monday and landed on a bloody great rock & hurt my foot. Then I ran 7 miles on Monday evening, and it hurt even more. Rested Tuesday... still hurt. Ran 4 miles yesterday... and today it's killing!

May as well get it checked, it can't hurt; do they have x-rays in gps? (showing my ignorance here!)

not generally, thats the argument for thes polyclinics, your best going to non emergancy clinic at local A&E,

is the pain in the ball of your foot , and along the outside edge

The pain is along the outer metatarsal.

I work in a hospital, so I have reasonably easy access to an X-ray department, but I don't want to waste their time. A broken metatarsal doesn't normally require treatment or anything, just rest.

if its not broken you could have seriously damaged some of the muscles or connective tissue
def worth having checked out because if u leave it to heal by itself, as i did - and it heals badly - as mine did - you then have to go to physios once a week to have it looked at - as i am!

a broken foot is hard to tell - once of my mates slipped badly whilst walking, had some swelling around the ankle, hobbled off the mountain, went climbing the next day, still swollen, went to the doctor and had it in plaster for 3 months or whatever it is as hed badly broken one of the bones

(And rest isn't something I'm very good at! My plans for the weekend are to do a climb in the Lakes & recce the Jack Bloor fell race route. And the weekend after I'm doing the Open5. So not much rest - there's no way I'm going to waste the nice weather.)

do you run daily and on what surface?

MariaD

Hmmm... you may be right. I've only just come out of a year of physio for my hip & there's no way I want to do that again. I guess I should call occ. health tomorrow & get an appointment.

I don't run daily, just whenever I fancy it - mainly off-road.

just thought you might have damaged your heel like i did and the pain shows up in the ball of your foot , i just went fishing for three months , so it wasnt that bad

I broke my foot a couple of years ago jumping downstairs. I had a 1cm white swelling just over the outside edge of my foot. I couldn't walk on it, it took a day or two before i got to the hosptial ("go to bed son you havn't done anything"....wakes up in the morning..."MUUUUM I can't walk!")

Anyway I had fractured the rear part of my 5th metatarsal where the bone sticks out. I was in knee high plaster for 4 weeks.

Might be a good idea to get it checked out?

It's not broken!

Saw occ. health this morning & they sent me to our A&E dept. Apparently it's not broken, just badly sprained, and they said I should just rest it.

So I'm not going to recce the Jack Bloor route tomorrow, but I reckon I'm still going climbing on Sunday.

Congratulations on NOT having a broken foot. If you need any information about the meaning of the word 'rest' and how to do it, just ask. I do it whenever I can and have got quite good at it. Sometimes, I can do it for weeks on end...

I've rested today! Not done any exercise at all.... unless you count weeding the garden & planting it up with some hew herbs & veg for the summer, which was surprisingly hard work! I'm going to try & grow courgettes, tomatoes & peppers as an experiment - if it goes well I'll branch out into other stuff next year.

Ouch! Just saw this Maria. Bet you will still thrash me in the Open 5.

I@ve just discovered gardening too! Your right, I think it could qualify as an extreme sport. Planted squash, sunflowers,(black ones and gold ones) carrots, lettuce, Dalia's, rocket, basil, lots of herbs, pansies, budlia bushes for the butterflies, and a honeysuckle for the scent. Also now the proud owner of 14 tropical fish. Found the tank and fish on the web and brought off someone in Nottingham, so it's fully mature and the fish all get on. Took me till 3am on Saturday morning to get the tank set up but they look great. Still managed to get out to Burbage in the afternoon, if a little bleary eyed.

I'm really careful about jumping off things these days. I fell 6ft when soloing something at Burbage once. Landed on a pointy rock which twisted my ankle before tipping me sideways onto my arm. The shattered elbow actually caused me less problems than the twisted ankle, because it was easier to rest.

I won't thrash you - I'm under strict instructions from OH to walk or stop completely at the first hint of pain (he doesn't want me to jeopardise the Alps trip)!

I'm just going to take it easy & enjoy it - like I said, I'm officially still in recovery with my hip, so I'm not going to be pushing the boat out.

Seems a reasonable idea to me :) When's the open 5? Is it coming up soon?
