how to get water?

i am planing a 1 week trip into the highlands this summer.
in the past i have only gone for 1 or two days and have either carried all my water with me or have been close enough to civilisation to be able to refil from a tap.
thios time i will not be able to do this.
does anybody know how to make water from lochs and streams drinkable with the minimum of expense?
