If you have not heard the story yet, a new book out called 'Between a rock and a hard place' tells a remarkable story of a climber who was out on his own and got his hand jammed between a boulder and the wall of a canyon. To cut a long story (very) short, he finally got away by amputating his arm between the elbow and wrist, using his Leatherman.
When you have read the book, please add your comments to this thread.

I heard the story on the radio. It was a nightmare. I could just imagine what he must have felt like thinking he was going to die on his own. But cutting your own arm off is something else!

I finished reading it a few days ago, it really is an inspiring, but scary story.
He is climbing and a rock falls on him, trapping his arm between the boulder and a cliff face. He tries everything to get himself free (I won't go into detail as i don't want to spoil the story for those of you who want to read it but haven't had the chance yet.) and does everything to keep himself alive. Eventually he cuts of his arm and escapes from the canyon.
The book also tells of what goes on back home where his parents, work colleagues and friends gradually find out that he has gone missing and how he is found (he didn't leave anyone information about where he was going or what he was doing.)
It is also like an autobiography as it tells of his previous adventures climbing, skiing, walking and kayaking.
Overall it is a fantastic read, there is a lot of lessons to be learnt from it. And it has a happy ending :)
