What utensils do you usually take with you on camp? For arguments sake, let's call it a base camp rather than backpacking.
Is there anything extra you need to carry for that special meal, or does your trusty penknife do the job well enough?

A pair of wooden spoons and a spatula, 50p for the set from tescos. cheeper the anything else on the outdoor market, lighter then anything on the outdoor market, and more rigid then anyhting on the outdoor market - very useful for trying to clean all the burnt bits off the bottom!

I usually only take a spoon and a sharp penknife. Like Jake D, I use chopsticks, but only when there is wood around to make a pair.

Other than the normal campside utensils, whenever I am planning on cooking, I always bring a pair of fairly-heavy leather gloves for manipulating hot pots and moving the campfire to get it even.

My SAK "Multi-tool" & SAK "Hunter" knife always go with me. I make chop sticks of willow in the field to eat and cook with.

I have a spoon with a sharp edge that seems to serve me for most purposes. I rarely cook anything other than dehydrated meals though so I don't need anything sophisticated.

ok- admit to being a bit of a gear freak in terms of cooking utensils... here goes..
folding "penknife style" KFS by coleman I think..
victorinox "hunter" (there are models I prefer but my only current knife is the hunter)
MSR folding spatula.

Am I the only one using the plastic knife and fork from the local kebab van? :p I should really invest in a decent set of cutlery :(

Depends who you are, as to whether the chopsticks are any good, in my oppinion. If you're being fed, then chopstick food is great. If you're feeding other people though, it's a lot easyer to give everybody a knife, fork and spoon; you can say a few big ol' bits of meat in a stew is fully prepared then!

How would you eat Smash (a backpacking staple) with chopsticks?
Ollie

I'm not sure, but it'd be funny to watch!

Ugh! You really consider smash a staple of any kind? : (
However, though I do like chopsticks, a spoon as well really is indespensible - even the chinese have spoons (traditionaly I mean, I know there are knives and forks in china now too!)

Smash and Beanfeast is one of the nicest meals in the world! At least it is when you're hungry, wet and cold...

you could easily eat smash with chopsticks - the beans could just take longer.
soup would be difficult

Drill holes down the middle, then suck gravy up as if it were a straw. Makes them lighter too!!

Or you could just carry a straw....

Ollie

Soup? I thought we were talking about gravy!?
MariaD
14th September 2007, 10:41 AM
Ah, but isn't gravy just weak beef soup in disguise?
Marmot
