That weired hooky thing on harnesses

what is it for?
it seems to big to be there for a chalk carrier, yet it seems odd to have a hook for gear that for the most part already comes attached to a clip of some sort
any ideas?

Ive seen them, they seem to be only on the newer ones

on the back, right? yer quite useless for holding most geat, what ive done it put a length o sting tied in an arc on the back to make an extra gear loop
