I have a Silva Ranger, a mirror sighting compass with adjustable declination and an inclometer. I just bought a Suunto MC-2, which is basically the same quality of compass with the same features, just to have a back up of the same quality. Whether you need such an expensive compass would depend on the type of navigation you plan to do, an ordinary base plate compass will do for most applications, but I would want adjustable declination on any of my compasses. I like the larger mirror sighting compass for more accurate triangulation and shooting long distance azimuths.

Also, the mirror is very handing for checking that you look OK before leaving the tent.

Typical man. Can't you just leave your makeup at home?

It can be really startling to catch a glimpse of yourself in your compass mirror after having been out for a few weeks and are planning to hitch back to your car. You look at the scraggly hair and beard, windburnt face, peeling nose and lips and bloodshot eyes and ask yourself, "Would I give that person a ride?". You then realize you forgot your comb, and when you try to comb your hair with your fingers, it only looks worse. Then you curse at the mirror and slam it shut, reminding yourself not to look at that thing again.
