I don't go climbing much, but after only a short time climbing, my fingers feel as if soebody has been trying to sandpaper off my fingerprints. Is this common? How often do you have to climb before you get used to it? Is it worse on different rock surfaces?

Ever tried climbing/scrambling on the Cuillin? They're made of Gabbro - now there's a rock that'll slice your fingers off & shred your equipment!
NB: It may be painful, but Gabbro really is fantastic. In the dry it's the stickiest, grippiest rock I've ever been on. In the wet, however, it turns into a mountain-shaped ice rink. Don't even think about it...
