I hope this is a bit of a conversation starter; if everyone has the same point of view, mabey not!

A number of my friends are set dead against alcohol during any outdoor activities: this isn't a safety 'don't drink and climb' theme, but more a social one. I think many like being outdoors partly to get aways from some parts of modern life for a while (those who do it just for the activities may disagree). These people think alcohol is one of those things.

Now there are also those who seem to enjoy nothing more than getting drunk around a camp fire, but being generally a non drinker myself, I don't usually go for this sort of thing myself. However, I still don't have any problem with others drinking.

So, what's your point of view? Is alcohol one of those things that should be left behind, or is it an excellent way to relax with friends at the end of the day?

I personally think that if you are out partaking in an activity, such as climbing, hiking, kayaking etc you shouldn't be drinking alcohol as it does delay your reactions and can could potentially cause an accident.

I think that it isn't a probem if you are sat around a campfire in the evening having a few drinks, as long as someone is still completely sober, so that if anything happens they can go for help. This is especially important if it is on a camp with minors.

After an enjoyable days walking, we've set up tents, done all our admin and eaten, nice to sit back and chill with a few glasses of wine putting the world to rights under the stars. Box of wine, take the bladder out of the box easy to carry! But hey that's just my brother and I.:)

My personal view is that a nice drink to end the day is one of the best things about backpacking. I agree with Timmy about the dangers of mixing it with potentially dangerous activities. It's can also be a bad thing to take too much alcohol in cold weather - but I'm sure a can of beer or glass of wine won't do anybody any harm.

One of my most memorable evenings was spent sitting round on boulders chatting to some wonderful walking partners, drinking beer from cans cooled in the ice of the Gornergrat glacier.

You should be adult enough to know what to drink and not to drink. Always err on the side of caution. If there is an accident then it may go against you in a court of law.
