Its all well and good thinking, 'its alright, if i get into trouble i'll just call mountain rescue', but how do u exactly go about doing that?

Here's what to do: taken from the mountain rescue website

Phone 999
Ask for the police then mountain rescue
Give the police as much information as you can
including where you are
If you have come off the fell, stay where you are

Once you've successfully called out a Mountain Rescue team, your continued assistance is vital. You are most important person in the rescue as you hold most of the information we need.

Do not return to the casualty.
We need to talk to you and will send someone to you.
This will speed up our job further.

It's also useful to be able to give a 6 fig map reference and terrain desription. That's where a pencil and paper come in handy!

Also worth paying attention to landmarks on the route - look out for wierdly shaped large rocks, streams, pubs...

Yes, all good stuff, I would reiterate Marmot's advice:

Ring 999 - ask for Police - they will call Mountain Rescue. Make the casualty site very visible from a distance or from the air.

DO NOT ask for ambulance!!! If you do you will be put through to them first, before the police, and the Ambulance Service will NOT usually call for mountain rescue until they themselves have attempted to attend the situation alone.

This causes delays. Once the Police have called Mountain Rescue, and the incident is being attended to, then the MR Team (or the Police) can call the Ambulance Service, and the casualty probably doesn't need the Ambulance for an hour or so anyway.

Just one other thing - make the casualty site as visible as possible - lots of bright colours and noise. At night gets lamps and torches lit, and don't forget that the flash from a camera will be seen from a long way off too.
