Hmmm, what can you say. It's tragic that things like this happen.
I'd be interested to know how many qualified leaders there were down there with the children. On a trip like that there must have been someone at the back, making sure that no one fell behind. I'm not blaiming the leaders, but I think that if they had been on their gaurd a bit more it might not have been a situation that ended in a loss.
I guess there is a lesson to be learnt by all. In this kind of situation, look out for the weather forecast and if you are in the slightest doubt call off the trip.

A real tragedy :(
Whilst obviously saddening, I have to wonder what effect this will have on the cotton wool society we live in!

Does this mean yet again people who are willing to teach youngsters abouit the outdoors and willing to put the time in outdoors with them will have their wings clipped again by so called do gooders who have never been outdoors on an adventure trip. I think teachers and Scout leaders will again suffer because of this.

And yet I suspect that, if correctly organised, potholing, caving, climbing, etc is safer than crossing the road every morning to go to school.

Aye, I guess that's true.
A hell of a lot more kids die crossing roads etc than they do out on the hills.

As a person who takes out youngsters for Adventurous Activities, it is a minefield out there regarding health and safety and risk assessment. Anyone else like me who teaches youngsters outdoors should take time to read the booklet written by DfEE called Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits. There is loads of useful information that can used when with youngsters. Also it pays to get the training Your local council will do a risk assessment course and Health and Safety course. Why not enquire if your not sure. this day and age we must remember the old adage "cover your arse"
