I have just bought a new bike and when I went to inflate the tyres, I discovered that the valve is a different size to those on my old bike. I used to be able to use the same pump on my bike as I did on my car. These valves are smaller. Can I cange them or is it worth looking for an adapter?

Im not a mountain biker by any means, but i dont think its possible to replace just the valve, id suggest going for an adapter, or changing the entire inner tube to a tube that has the valves attached that match your pump. I could be sersiously mistaken about the course of action by the way!

Why not just get a different adaptor for the puump?

most definatly worth getting an adapter ..there only £2 at halfords ...and ( i cnt remeber the name of those type of valve), but they do tend to be better on a mountain bike because of there smaller design ....only isues is with tem is that they taken longer to pump up ...and you cant use a compressor on them.

£2??? rip off!! i got an adaptor (shraeder > presta) for £1!!!lol is probably better to get an adaptor, incase ur mate has the same problem, and they need to borrow it.

There are two types of valve, presta & schraeder. Many new bike pumps come with a removable adaptor insert which will fit either one, just ask at the shop. I personally prefer schraeder as they are less fiddly and not so prone to damage, plus if you ever feel the need to use a garage to inflate your tyres the compressor will fit, not so with the presta. Of course everybody has their own views on which they think is best. Regarding the hand pump, there are literally hundreds of them on the market. I have a mini double barrel pump with a double adaptor. This will fit either valve so I can lend someone else a hand if they have a different valve. Plus being a double barrel it telescopes down to a more manageable size with no compromise on the psi per pump - one thing that really gets you hot and sweaty when you ned to change a tube or repair. Also handy to have a pair of tyre levers, a tube repair kit, a bike multi tool and a spare tube.
