To be honest, all i really wanted to do was show you the eVent website - cause the flash animation is brilliant! http://www.eventfabrics.com/index.php?flash=1

But then i realised that this could actually lead onto a serious(!) discussion.

Are the differences between gore tex/eVent/etc/etc noticeable - or are they just different names for a bit of plastic with loads of small holes in it?

I don't own any eVENT gear, but when I borrowed a friends eVENT jacket for the day earlier this year (I forget the exact model) I was very impressed. It seemed to me to be a lot more breathable than equivalent GoreTex jackets.

The main problem with eVENT gear seems to be that there's a relatively limited amount of it available, which means you have less variety to choose from. This is mainly due to the fact that GoreTex has such a tight stranglehold on the outdoors clothing market - manufacturers know that 99% of hillwalkers have heard of GoreTex and using a recognisable brand of waterproof lining will help sell the gear, regardless of quality.
