What sized rucksack should a bigginer buy for two to four night expeditions in the UK. What should a beginner look for in terms of features. What is the best rucksack you have ever owned?

One of my favourites was my old Berghaus Cyclops Roc, in canvas, with a leather bottom. It was great to carry, at about 65 litres great for a weekend and with the two additonal pouches, saw me through a two week alpine trek. I daresay there are many better packs on the market now but (getting emotional now...) I just loved that pack. (...even more emotional...) I went to the great campsite in the sky last year after over a quarter of a century of faithful service. (...fade to faint sobbing sounds...).

The main importance is that it fits, the second is when you fill it full of gear you dont tip over, thats the basics of what u need to know.

Climbing style bags have no, or small pockets on the side, this is to aid arm movement, not essential if your just walking with it.

dont go in to to much detail there, marmot!
I have a big frame so i can take a larger bag, other people hav a smaller frame so would have a smaller bag.
60l seems about right for a w/e, but just cause u got a big bag dont mean u hav to fill it!

I've done 8 days in Africa, including a them-a-rest, 1 season sleeping bag, clothing and footwear with a 30L pack?!?!

Remember that what ever you buy you have to carry. In this case I believe that small IS beautiful!

Yes, but how many porters did you have carrying the water, stoves, food, tents etc? ;)

I remember the old Cyclops Roc. They were good rucksacs but not as good as even the cheapest on the market today. If you liked your old cyclops, you will be easily pleased by todays standards.

I spent an hour in Cotswold camping and I know what you mean!
