Waterproofing

Chemical coating

A cheaper pair of boots which cite "waterproof" on the side will be coated in a chemical which repels water from the upper - the outer material of the boot. Stitching will be a point of weakness and in time this chemical coating will wear away afer use and will have to be reproofed. This is not saying that you wont have dry feet, but they will require alot more maintainance. They will however be more breathable then a pair of boots with a waterproof laminate inside it. No matter what the claim is to the contary.

Laminate

This is a layer of plastic inside the construct of the boot which acts as a physcial barrier to prevent water penetrating through the boot. As long as this layer is intact then for a longer period of time water will be kept from the boot. This is not to say that these boots wont need proofing, but it will need to be done least often and will keep water out for a longer period of time.

Sole rigidity
