Kelly Kettle

From Guides

The Kelly Kettle, also known as the Volcano Kettle, is designed to boil water using whatever fuel is to hand, without having to use an exposed fire. This allows the kettle to be used in all weather conditions. Documented as first being used by Irish fishermen, it can boil 2.5 pints in approximately 3 minutes, faster then many modern stoves!

Made from aluminium, the Kelly Kettle is basically a double-walled chimney with the water contained in the chimney wall.

Contents

How to use one

  • Once the kettle is filled with water, and ensuring to leave the wooden bung off, start a small fire in the base, set the kettle on the base and drop additional fuel (twigs, leaves, grass, paper, etc.) down the chimney.
  • When the water boils, hold the handle at an angle of 90° to the Kettle - then lift the Kettle clear of the base.
  • To pour, lift it by the handle and tilt it using the cork chain.

How it works

Surface area is the key. The inner wall of the chimney heats up very quickly as it is heated by the fire, this then radiates the heat energy to the water trapped inside the double skin. As there is such a large surface area in relation to actual volume to water, the water is heated very quickly.
