Layering system

From Guides

The layering system is used to best trap hot air escaping from your body and being lost to the atmosphere, by using several thinner layers instead of one thick one. Clothes themselves are designed to stop you from losing body heat - they don't 'make you warm', but rather they stop you from becoming cold.

The traditional layering system will comprise of at least three main layers:

Base Layer

The base layer is the layer worn closest to your body, and it's main job is to wick moisture away from your skin, and pass it to the next layer so it can eventually evaporate.

Insulation Layer

Usually a fleecy material, the insulation layer is designed to trap the hot air escaping. This is the layer that many people may choose to 'multiply', wearing several light fleeces together to maximise the effect.

Shell Layer

The shell layer is waterproof, windproof and breathable, stopping rain and other precipitation from getting in, but allowing your own moisture to get out.
