This article deals with portable hand held water filters, not stills (or electrical/industrial filters). Handheld water filters are used to purify water, almost always for human consumption.

TypesEfficacyWater filters obviously vary in quality depending on individual design. Some filters may treat chemical contamination, but others will have not effect on chemicals in the water. All working filters will remove pathogens in the water to some extent, though none will remove all viruses, so another method of water purification will be needed afterwards to give complete protection.
